Confession: I Judge You By Your Cutlery

February 11, 2009

Confession: I judge restaurants, hotels, parties -- even my friends -- by the fork I'm given.

Note to Brides Everywhere: Good Cutlery Is Important

If it's heavy, clean and has curved edges, I have an inkling that the food will be good. If it's tinny and has sharp sides -- the kind that threaten to cut my skin when I turn my fork on its side -- I approach the meal with more caution. Because if you can't pick out good cutlery, how can I trust your skills in the kitchen?

Moral of the story? Invest in the good stuff. It makes you look like you know what you're doing, even if you don't.

I try not to be judgmental - I really really try. But whenever someone places their hand in mine and acts like they would rather place their hand in a meat grinder than shake my hand... I judge them.

I have two interviews scheduled for tomorrow, and another three on Friday. I'm going over and over in my head about not wanting to judge the people I'm interviewing strictly on their handshake... but I know I will fail miserably. If they come in and place their limp hand in mine, I will want to show them the door.

At least you've come to terms with your judgmental side... I still fight with mine. ha.

Oh thank goodness I have good utensils. I saw the title of the post and thought you might be looking at the knives I have...now, those are not such high quality...

3

Lisa: I'm not afraid to say it - I judge people by their handshakes, too. I just can't take a person seriously if their hand is limp in mine.

Jenny B: I won't judge you by your knives unless you make me use them. Good knives will TOTALLY change the way you cook. Or at least make it more enjoyable. I will say this much: no one should be ordering knives off that infomercial they just saw.

I think we'd be okay in the cutlery department but please don't come to my house asking for a glass of water. We have wine glasses, shot glasses, martini glasses, even mismatched coffee cups. But we don't have a single plain ol' water glass. Drinking water out of a wine glass has makes my guests feel sophisticated. Um, at least that's what I tell myself.

5

I love our cutlery except that it's pretty heavy and practically always falls off the plate when you're clearing the table, annoying!

6

Dingo: I have never even heard of people who don't own water glasses. Though I have to tell you: it would be VERY fun (and fancy) to use a wine glass for rinsing my mouth after brushing my teeth. Maybe I'll start keeping a wine glass in there just for that occasion. ;)

7

you know, i think we have the same cutlery only i call mine silverware.... plus i have wooden spoons so you know its all yu-uh-ummmy!!!

8

Willow: Mine are from Crate & Barrel, and actually named "Willow" (though they've long since been discontinued, which makes me sad because I want to buy more of them).

9

Funny, i judge people by their silverware drawer, not necessarily the silverware. Granted, this does not apply to restaurants, but when people just have all of their forks, knives and spoons all mixed together, it makes my skin crawl.
Your drawer is beautifully organized, by the way. I totally appreciate the work you put in there. :)

Jes, I hope you don't judge me by my cutlery because I don't have the good stuff! I'm the type of person that will use whatever I have to get by until I find EXACTLY what I want. Then I will spend the money on the good stuff and not a moment sooner.

Missed you and Roger on Saturday, I hope you are feeling better. I am glad I at least got to see you guys pre-sickness on Friday night!

I think you will love my cutlery and the food will live up to your expectations. I have really nice heavy cutlery. I love it.

12

I guess it's a good thing I get your cutlery hand-me-downs...if they were good enough for you - I'm guessing there good enough for me! Wait - maybe that's why you're getting rid of them...hmmm...are you judging me?

13

I completely AGREE! Although I'm thinking I should rethink my dishes because my silverware (yes..I call cutlery that too) feels like it's going all kung-foo on my dessert plates.

Hopefully your opinion won't be too badly shaken if you ever look in our silverware drawer. Hand-me-downs from my grandmother and my mother supplemented by carefully selected pieces from Goodwill. It's a family thing and a green thing.
