I Like Bacon

July 22, 2008

I developed my longest-running crush with Ren when I was in eighth grade. He was a little older, by (should I admit this?) 20 years, and almost every day we would spend quality time together (well, it seemed like every day, though I can’t imagine my mother allowing that). I would sprawl across our living room floor, snack in hand, and he...well, he was a bit of a rebel. Ren was full of drama and loved to dance.

First Hollywood Crush

Wait – we all know I’m talking about Footloose, right? And Kevin Bacon? I rewound those choreographed scenes over and over and over again, the parts where Kevin taught Willard how to dance, or when Kevin was dancing through the rafters in the warehouse, or when they all snuck out to the dance bar across the state line. Even the footwork in the opening credits had me hooked.

Beyond the movie, though, I really knew nothing about Kevin Bacon. I didn’t know what other movies he was in, for example, and I certainly didn’t know that (by the time I discovered Footloose) he was married. Truth be told, I didn’t find out he was married until just last night.

I was looking through part of the swag we got at BlogHer this year, and included in our tote was a copy of the August 2008 Redbook magazine. Kyra Sedgwick is featured on the cover with this blurb: “How she and hubby Kevin Bacon keep it sexy after 20 years” and I’m sorry, wha? Hubby? Kevin Bacon? 20 years? MY FIRST LOVE HAS CHEATED ON ME? Say it’s not so!

I shared my shock with Roger, who just stared at me, dumbfounded. I get it, okay? Not everyone shares my love for Kevin Bacon. Not everyone thinks he’s hot, or will swear to see any movie he’s in simply because he’s in it. And I’m okay with that. But Roger took it one step too far, what with all his comments about my irrational crushes on actors who can’t act. I mean, Roger hasn’t even SEEN Footloose. How can he issue such a blanket statement?

In general, I think Roger has good taste in movies – with the exception of Blade Runner and those stupid Aliens movies – and now I’m beginning to wonder if I really am alone in my love for Footloose and Kevin Bacon and any movie containing a high volume of dancing (see: Center Stage, Step Up, Bring it On, Save the Last Dance, Billy Elliot and any other movie I’ve temporarily forgotten but have certainly watched, probably several times).

Still, Kevin Bacon is tops for me – beyond his movies and looks and dancing, I adore that he’s a family man. I respect that he’s been married for 20 years to the same woman, and in Hollywood, no less! And that just makes me love him all the more.

So this begs the question: who is your Hollywood crush? (Or can you and I bond over Kevin’s weird hair and dimpled cheeks? Swoon!)

Well, I can't say I love Bacon, although I don't dislike him either... but I CAN say that you are not alone in your love for Footloose or movies containing a high volume of dancing. I love them. And I also have a major penchant for So You Think You Can Dance. I am so glad I'm back in town before the season is over, and I can actually watch it!!

2

That's ALL I was talking about at the Ruby Skye party. I was all, "OK, cool. But WHERE IS KEVIN BACON?" Because I love him. And Chris understands that if he walked up to me tomorrow and asked me to run away with him, I would totally send Chris a postcard.

Heh.

(Still resisting the urge to weep and gnash my teeth about MISSING YOU there.)

3

I too loved Footloose. I would jump on the bed and dance whenever I was lucky enough to find it on. Probably on TBS. :)

I have a few celebrity crushes: Hugh Grant, Brad Pitt, Colin Firth, and Jon Bon Jovi. I heart them to the point of drooling a little.

4

AHAHAHAHA, I saw your picture on my feed and thought that you had snagged a pic with Kevin Bacon at BlogHer.

Oh Jes, I share your obsession admiration with Ren. He was such a rebel, but with the dance moves of a god. And he knew gymnastics. Ahhhhh what a movie. I wanted to be SJP, the sweet and a bit nerdy friend who was fun and spunky.

5

Oh and celebrity crushes. Hmmm let's go back to my pre-teen/teen years. There was my heart-felt devotion to Kirk Cameron (we shared the same birthday and I was convinced that Candace and I would be great sisters-in-law). Then I fell hard for Colin Firth and Sean Connery (older men of great stature and british accents have me in a trance). Now, I'll admit, I would get all tongue tied and filled with butterflies if I ran into John Kransinski in person. He's perfect.

6

If you are going to write his name on your notebooks, take note that it is Beacon :)

I love Patrick Dempsey. More than I can articulate.

7

kevin Bacon was also my girlhood crush when I was about 12 years old. I always liked to watch him in Tremors, LOL.

I also love dance movies and singing movies. I just bought Once and Fiddler On The Roof. Oklahoma? I love it when Will does the dance scene at the train station. South Pacific? Oh yeah. Shall We Dance? I wish I had J Lo's body. Chicago? Yup.

My current celebrity crushes are Gerard Butler and Adam Garcia (especially in Coyote Ugly, woohoo!). Matt McConoughy in Sahara is pretty hot, too. Oh! And Justin Bartha as Riley Poole in National Treasure. Ok. I'd better stop now. One more! Sorry, but I looooove Paul Walker. Okay and Vin Diesel and Tyrese Gibson are hot too.

I'm drooling now.

The movie Timeline has both Paul Walker and Gerard Butler in it. Oi. :D

I win--I've met Kevin Bacon! He brought his kids to a birthday party when I was 17 and worked at Discovery Zone. I got to hold his hand...erm, cut off his wristband. *sigh*

Other celebrity crushes have to include Brad Pitt and Will Smith.

I LOVE the picture! And I LOVE Footloose, I think that must be another Nacho Cheesy flick. We own it on DVD. By the way, you failed to mention Dirty Dancing.
My last celebrity crush was so bad I had to stop watching movies starring him because it was bordering on a real emotional attachment. Like, I really wanted to marry him, and I was in college! Sadly, he has left us, Heath Ledger. I remember exactly where I was when I heard that he had passed, and I really mourned for him.
And then there is my other unhealthy attachment - Superman, sigh. One of my students once asked me if Superman were a real person would I would marry him. I told them since I was already married, no. But if I weren't married, then yes.

You are not alone in your love for all movies re: *~DANCE~* -- if it's got some dancing, I am watching it. That is just the way it is. I LOVE A Chorus Line, both on stage and the movie. And Center Stage is just so fun to watch. I get told that the acting in that movie is...not so much. But you know, if the dancing is good, then I can look past the not-so-good acting and the not-so-good storyline most of the time. However, if the dancing is not-so-good and the acting is much-much-worse and the not-so-good storyline is completely ridiculous, then there is no charitable goodwill extended. (See Exhibit A: Save the Last Dance Part Deux.)

Anyway, I have a strange fascination with Michael Cera. If he's in it, I am watching it. Luckily he tends to pick good things to be in. And, also, I have a girlcrush on Diane Keaton. She's so sassy.

11

will smith..... no question.... and i totally think i could take jada.
yuh-uh-ummmy!!!!
how on earth did you not know kevin bacon was married???

12

Kevin always seemed scary to me..maybe a little unstable?

Dempsey! Yes, that's mine. I could watch him peel paint and get turned on.

13

I love footloose! Everytime it comes on TV I HAVE to watch. I watched it when I was growing up and I used to rewind the last scene over and over again. I love dancing movies Center Stage is so corny but oh so good. Also do you remember Newsies? That was the start of my celebrity long time crush Christian Bale. So fear not you are not alone in loving dancing movies.

14

Paul Walker. Hands down the finest thing I've ever seen walk the face of Earth. Too much? Google him and look at the first pic that pops up. Good lord the things I would do to that boy.

15

Okay - I have to reply to both Jessica's post & Erica's comment -
1) I had no idea Kyra Sedgewick was married to Kevin Bacon - for 20 years??!!! I have been living under a rock.
2) Erica- Heath Ledger and Superman?? How did I miss this? Again, living under a rock...
I had quite the crush on Dean Cain (erica- the superman of the 90s!) when I was a teen. Then I had a love for Jakob Dylan. I still plan to name a son Jakob...

16

For some reason I've always found Mark Ruffalo rather yummy.

17

My roomie is a big Kevin Bacon fan. She has a thing for Footloose and Tremors.
Did you know he's also in a band with his brother? The Bacon Brothers? We considered going to see them a few times but never got around to it.

I'll have to go with Robert Downey Jr as IronMan.... swoon. :)

18

I love Kevin Bacon because his last name is... BACON! I'm like that dog on the Beggin' Strips commercial that says bacon, bacon, bacon over and over again.

Plus, I loved Footloose, Billy Elliot, Step Up, Center Stage, Save the Last Dance, You Got Served, Fame, Dirty Dancing, Bring it On, Stick It, Stomp the Yard and I'm sure I'm forgetting some as well.

Roger, however, has mixed taste in movies, I mean, he did pick that movie with Icharus and The Lookout sort of weirded me out too, but, alas, he is YOUR HUSBAND and you like that movie The Kingdom which I thought was a snore fest.

19

Roger is wrong - Kevin Bacon is great! He's just so likable (well, I guess he wasn't too likable in the movie where he tried to kill Meryl Streep, but that was a good one!). Did you see that episode of Will & Grace where Jack was stalking him? I just love a celebrity who can make fun of himself. I also love any movies and tv shows with dancing, even if they're totally cheesy.

My celeb crush is Colin Firth. I loved him even before I saw him as Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice, but that just sealed the deal!

20

Kevin Bacon looked too chiseled for me to go all rawr over him. My hollywood pretend boyfriend list is too long, but right now I'm really into Robert Pattinson, who will be staring in the Twilight movie this december. Yes, I feel 15 all over again.
