Let's Get This Straight

October 11, 2007

A few weeks ago I sent an email to Whoorl with a simple subject line: "Hair. Help."

Oh – why hello there.

I was having a hair crisis, and in case you didn't know, Whoorl is the go-to girl for hair crises. I emailed these pictures of my hair to her, plus sent her paragraph upon paragraph of more information than she ever wanted to know about my mane and how I style it and what products I use. I mean, if she's going to help me, she needs as much information as possible, right? I thought so, too.

But here is where I have to be honest: I like my hair. I like the color. I like the curls. Most of the time, I even like the length and the style. It's just that, in general, I don't feel very polished. I feel like I have a haphazard look, like maybe I belong on a beach in a sarong, selling trinkets to foreign tourists. (On second thought, a beach doesn't sound bad right about now...)

Check out those long, luscious locks.

The thing is that my hair is really super thick. I have loose curls – they're not tight at all – but it's definitely more than a wave. Most of the time, I feel like my hair is so heavy (because it is) and just hangs there (because it does) awkwardly. If I leave it down, it falls into a crooked part in the middle of my scalp.

I really don't know what to do with it other than shrug my shoulders and hope for a better hair day tomorrow, a day where there will be less frizz and more togetherness. Hello out there? Am I the only one who has this problem?

I'm tired of ponytails, of buns, of pulling it half-back in a clip. I told Whoorl that it's like when you walk down the street and see a woman (that woman is usually Whoorl, but that's beside the point) and everything about her is so polished - from her shoes to her clothes to jewelry to her hair. And right now I'm that person who just stares after her, wishing I could pull her away for a day of shopping and coiffing. I frantically try to memorize everything about her so I can go home and try to re-create her look. To sum it up, I just need HELP.

Wait - do I have a mullet? It looks like I have a mullet.

I don’t straighten my hair because I've learned the hard way, despite my optimism every time I try, that I don't know the first thing about straightening it. I have used a flat iron, I have used a blow dryer. Afterward, my hair generally looks like someone took a wire brush to a poodle. (Note: I'm not using a wire brush.)

I don't want to have straight hair permanently (Remember? I like my curly hair. I even want curly hair.), but I would like to have the option of it every now and again, just to change things up a bit and feel a bit more polished. In response to my hair crisis, Whoorl taught me a few tricks of the trade, which I totally plan on employing in the next few weeks.

That is, unless I can find a way to permanently relocate to a beach. Preferably in Thailand. Or Belize. I won't be picky.

I agree with you. I love your hair. It's beautiful. But I have a similar problem with my wavy/curly/frizzy hair... it may look pretty when it just hangs there, but it doesn't look very polished. I'm looking forward to see what whoorl did to it!

SHUT UP! Jes, I covet your hair, the curls, the lush body, the thickness, the fact that down, back, or up it always looks great. If I could somehow have you hair (and my color - cause with your dark hair and my pasty white skin I would look dead) I would be a happy girl.

3

I have hair like you only my curls are a little bit more tight. I feel you pain because by the end of the day my hair looks like a triangle flat on top and curly on the bottom. Does your hair ever do this?

I do like my curly hair but it's best right after a shower and then it goes downhill from there.

This is so funny, I'm walking out the door to get my hair cut in a few minutes and I stopped to read this. Find a good hairdresser who knows curly/wavy hair and have them thin it.

I have so much hair that as it grows out it loses all of it's shape and I start to look like a big mushroom head but for the last 2 years I've been going to the same lady and she knows what she's doing and my hair is awesome.

I can have the length that I want with the curl that I want but without all of the weight, which is what usually causes your hair to look not good.

You should be able to keep your length, so you can put it in a ponytail but have a lot of the middle weight taken out so that it's lighter and bouncier.

And you do have gorgeous hair. Love the color, love the curls.

5

That's my hair problem too. Especially this week, when even the curls won't stay like they should. I've totally gien up blowdrying, but maybe I'll give Whoorl's method a shot. One day, when I get up the courage.

WE COULD BE HAIR TWINS!

I kid you not! We have twin hair. Crazy.

And I sometimes wish mine were more polished too. But that requires actual EFFORT, and I am just happy to get out the door in the morning fully clothed and in my right mind.

:)

I have wavy hair too and most of the time I wear it straight. I wash it at night and then blow dry it with one of those hair dryers that has a comb attached (I'm lazy). Then I straighten it with my Chi in the morning. It is imperative that you use a Chi, no other flat iron will work.

:)

PS - Your hair looks really good wavy.

You should check out NaturallyCurly.com! There's lots of great info on there for us curlyheads!

I have curly hair too... and it's rarely polished looking. Also, I never thought I could straighten my hair (where it wouldn't curl back up in ten minutes or less). Then I found this a flat iron that allows me to straighten wet hair. It works awesome. I still only use it once a month or less, but it only takes me about 20 minutes (and my hair is about as long as yours). I'm not good with hyper links so here is the flat iron I own. http://www.ekitchengadgets.com/373-s8000idta.html

But your curly hair is beautiful! It really looks perfect - it's a hell of a lot more polished looking than mine, that's for sure. But i get it; it's hard to feel put together when your hair never does the same thing two days in a row. My (curly) hair is thinner than yours, which isn't necessarily better. I think a good cut goes a long way, too. Layers add a lot.
I think i have to invest in a flat iron...

12

i feel you, i was lucky enough to have whoorl's hair stylist cut my hair on my last visit to socal, she used "here and there" layers. i have had all kinds of layers, but these eliminated weight w/o her cutting into my hair and adding more texture. the top layers are pretty short, but i can still pull it back into my infamous pony. i can now enjoy perfecting some o f whoorl's techniques b/c i don't have the bulk in the back or around the ends.

13

Oh if only my hair looked like yours! You have the perfect curl that I have wanted for every major event (prom/wedding) and the hairdresser always says, "No can do." (I'm paraphrasing of course.) However, as someone with curly hair I understand the frustration of having the same hairdo since 1996. So good luck! Although be prepared when I smooth my hair with a roller brush it always takes at least an hour. Are you bringing your new do to the PB?

14

I've always loved your hair! Take from one with straight hair - your hair is awesome!

15

I think your hair looks great, but I also know how you feel.

The curls are always prettier on someone else's head. :)

16

Did you take those pics via a mirror? Clever... clever... wow.

17

Your amazinly gorgeous locks have me green with envy! I loved my hair when it was that length... and that curly. I'm in a super-cropped state right now, and it makes my hair super wavy, but not curly in the least. Boo hoo!

I need to let it grow back out again... amazing tutorial! Thanks for the linkage!

My hair my wife's my step daughter's and my daughter's hair has a natural curl to it. All of us wear our hair straight. My wife and daughters straighten their with one of those irons and mine is just short. I have known many women all in church who have ultra curly hair. They straighten it by getting the blow dryer really HOT. One of them goes through a hair dryer every time she straightens it.

You and I have the same hair, except that yours is longer. The top of my hair is so thick it's really wide (trapezoidal) and all I can do is pull it back with a barette in an attempt to tame it. I hate it. I, too, would love the option of straight hair without having to sit under a hair dryer for an hour with a round brush just pulling away. Right now, my hair is even, but I wonder if cutting it in layers would help.

20

I hear you! No matter what your hair is like, it's nice to mix it up occasionally.

Remember how curly and thick and long my hair is? I would never attempt to straighten it at home anymore. It takes me about 40-45 minutes to dry and then at least another 20 to flat iron...WAY too much time. I pay the $25 at my salon to have a 'junior stylist' do it. Totally worth it in my book.

21

That is certainly one gorgeous mane of hair.

22

Your hair is GORGEOUS. But I can relate to wanting to mix it up once in awhile. One of my best friends has hair as curly as yours and she'd love to straighten it, but it takes her hours. Meanwhile, I would kill to have some curl.

23

Your readers are right: you have gorgeous hair. However, I totally understand how it is to be frustrated with what you have. It's the whole 'grass is greener' issue. Good luck trying out the new tips!

24

Yes, I LOVE your hair. That is all.

25

You're very pretty.
Just thought I'd mention it.
Have a nice day! :)

(I found these pics of you by pure chance.
I was Google-ing something else!)

26

OMG, our hair is almost identical. I hate it though when people say they love my curly hair because just once I want to have that straight, silky, smooth hair that I can leave down and just whisk my finger through.

I was insanely jealous of all those with the Jennifer Aniston style back in the day! Anyway, truly though having full curly hair is a great thing and you can enjoy it any way you want to.

27

DUDE! I totally know what you mean about the unpolished thing. I feel the EXACT same way!!! I have the hair of a 7 year old girl... all stringy, and ratty... no matter how often I brush it! And it just hangs there all limp and lifeless and horrible. Booo. Maybe I'll send whoorl a note!

(and p.s. I love your hair! I don't think you look unpolished at all!!!)

28

I know how you feel - I have had curly hair all my life and in the late 60's when long straight hair was the only acceptable style, I used to blow it dry, wrap it around my head, do all kinds of things (short of ironing it). I had it straightened once but it just made it frizzy and straight. I agree with some of the other commenters - what you want is a few more layers to make it less heavy. The blow-dry straightening that Whoorl recommended (yes, I checked it out!) is great for special occasions but if you're like me, who has time? I keep mine a lot shorter these days and just aim the dryer at it after I get out of the shower for about 3 minutes and let it curl now.
