I Heart Huckabee

September 06, 2007

I suppose it would be unfair to say that, politically, I don't identify myself with any one party. I do. I am a conservative, I always have been, I probably always will be. I don't always agree with Republican platforms. I don't always agree with Democratic platforms. I usually fall into the "Undecided" category, weighing my options based on which issues are more important to me and voting for the candidate whose platform is most harmonious with my own. This year, however, I know nothing about ANY of the candidates, other than:

- Rudy Giuliani has a hard last name to spell
- McCain is kind of pasty-looking
- Hillary Clinton scares me a little

Huckabee.jpgWhich is why I was anxious to watch the GOP presidential debate last night. Did you watch it? If not, you should have. It was a doozy. I left the discussion with a clear impression of my favorite candidate (Huckabee!) and my least favorite candidate (Paul). Granted, I know nothing about either candidate other than what I watched last night. Only a few issues were discussed and most of what I watched was entirely about foreign policy and, specifically, the war in Iraq. And that's exactly when Huckabee and Paul had a throw-down.

CNN.com reported on the tussle between Huckabee and Paul:

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee made a dramatic statement regarding Iraq at Wednesday night's GOP presidential debate, declaring, "We bought it because we broke it."

The comment came in perhaps the most compelling moment of the Republican debate when the Arkansas Republican directly confronted Texas Rep. Ron Paul on his position for an immediate withdrawal from the country.

"Congressman, whether or not we should have gone to Iraq is a discussion for historians, but we're there. We bought it because we broke it," he said. "We've got a responsibility to the honor of this country and the honor of every man and woman who has served in Iraq and our military to not leave them with anything less than the honor they deserve."

Amid loud cheers, Paul responded, "The American people didn't go in. A few people advising this administration, a small number of people called the neoconservatives, hijacked our foreign policy. They are responsible, not the American people."

Huckabee quickly fired back: "Congressman, we are one nation. We can't be divided. We have to be one nation under God. That means if we make a mistake, we make it as a single country."

As the crowd roared louder, Paul answered, "When we make a mistake, it is the obligation of the people — through their representatives — to correct the mistake, not continue the mistake. We have dug a hole for ourselves and we have dug a hole for our party. We are losing elections, and we are going down next year if we don't change it."

Huckabee replied loudly, "Even if we lose elections, we should not lose our honor."

After watching that dispute, I sort of want to give Huckabee a big ol' wet, sloppy kiss on the cheek.

Please do a little more research on Huckabee. From what I understand, he is pretty far on the right-end of the spectrum. Since you lean conservative, maybe you are ok with that, but I pretty much disagree with his positions on, well, everything. I also disagree with everything he said that you quoted above, so there you go.

-R-: You're right, I do need to do more research on Huckabee, and you're guaranteed that I will be in the coming weeks.

On another note, I'm so glad you spoke up. I don't talk politics much on this site just because it seems like so many of my readers are Liberal, and I don't want to ruffle any feathers. Some of my closest friends are Liberals, and we've just reached a sort of "agree to disagree" point in our friendships.

That said, I love hearing other points of view. At this point, who do you guys think you'd vote for? Because I've got lots of investigating to do.

I hate politics, but in this case, it's nice to hear a politician saying something I can listen to.

Don't really know anything yet about Huckabee, but NY was a pretty good place with Guiliani at the helm. I miss him here.

At this point in the race I'm not concerning myself with listening to any of the debates. For one, guys like Huckabee, McCain, and Paul have no chance in getting the nomination so I'd rather not waste my evenings listening to them drone on about how they'd do things differently. Our system is not set up for guys like them to get to the big show. And that's kind of unfortunate. On the other hand I don't watch the Democrat debates either. None of their candidates are saying anything that appeals to me. I'll just have to wait until two clear candidates are chosen to race against eachother.

Chad, my conservative hubby, loves Huckabee too. I even have a soft spot for him in my heart, since we went to college in Arkansas and dream of the day we'll return. I know, dreaming of Arkansas. Who'da thought.

Anyway, Chad tells me that Huckabee has a neat-o idea for getting rid of federal taxes and making everything sales-tax based. Not sure if it'll fly because of the damage it could do to the economy (I'd be a lot less inclined to buy a car if I knew that I'd have to pay thousands of dollars to the government to do it), but it sounds kind of visionary. And I do like the vision.

Politics fascinate me. I am a history dork, though, so that is probably not too surprising. It is interesting for me to look at something (say, the war in Iraq) and be able to trace its origins back a hundred years or so (British imperialism). You don’t get a lot of answers by doing this (although perspective is gained), but you start to notice patterns. Players may change, but the overall game (or problem) stays the same. Maybe that is what Mark Twain was talking about when he said, “It is not worthwhile to try to keep history from repeating itself, for man's character will always make the preventing of the repetitions impossible”?

I know, I know. I’m a pessimist.

I’m also what my father describes as “that damn liberal” (yes, I’m the black sheep of the family. Sigh…), so I probably won’t be casting any votes for Mike Huckabee anytime soon (despite the fact that I LOVE his name).

As for Giuliani, he was the baccalaureate speaker at my college graduation. Some students protested against his involvement in the ceremony. There was even a peaceful demonstration by a handful of students during the commencement itself. Personally, I have nothing against Giuliani. We don’t necessarily agree politically, but I think he did a lot for NYC while he was mayor and I respect that. Will I be voting for him?... Most likely, no, but won’t keep me from checking in on him (and the rest of the candidates) from time to time. Politics can be fun – I love figuring out where I stand on something and researching it to the point where I can debate the issue with friends and family! (Again, I'm a dork...)

I am conservative also and like Mike Huckabee. In my opinion, he is dead on about Iraq. I'm glad that there is follow through, even if it is out of obligation. He is also a Baptist minister, which I'm partial to. That being said, I'm all about Duncan Hunter this election season. He reminds me of the Reagan era beliefs and views and I just can't disagree with Reagan.

Jes, Check out Fred Thompson who just announced he's thrown his hat in the race for the Republican nomination. A former Senator and actor (the DA from Law and Order) he's one to watch in the future.

Personally, I haven't made up my mind yet, it's still early and the pool is pretty full of people trying to distinguish themselves from each other but not too much to lose voters. I think you'll start to see platforms begin to firm up and key stances on issues vocalized in the next few months.

On a personal note, I'm just excited your investigating politics. Wheeee!

However, that was not the end of the exchange between Paul and Huckabee... and according to the polls, it was Paul who clearly won the argument. One does not gain honor by stubbornly amplifying a horrific mistake. THAT is where Huckabee fell down.

If you research Paul, you might find out something interesting: He is the ONLY candidate who has consistently voted according to his campaign promises. He is the ONLY candidate who is promising to uphold the Constitution. He is the ONLY candidate who is telling you the truth, and damn the consequences. He might not be physically attractive, but he is the ONLY candidate who has been actually demonstrating that he possesses a pair of testicles.

While some of his ideas might seem "radical" to the public, that is because the public has gotten used to corrupt politicians who do not follow the law and the Constitution. Paul opposes that trend... which these days makes him seem strange. That is not an indictment of him, it is rather a sad statement about how bad things have gotten.

Great post! I discovered Huckabee back in May, and I've been sold ever since I began researching him. He's the real deal. Watch Huckabee on youtube to see him speak on the issues. Read his "issues" section on www.mikehuckabee.com. Read his books, Character Makes a Difference and From Hope to Higher Ground.

I've never been so excited about a candidate in my life, and for the first time began donating money to a campaign. It's great to see so many people discovering Mike Huckabee. He DOES a have a chance, and that's because he resonates with people's hearts and minds and lives his life as a strong servant leader.

Wow, very interesting comments. I love that people are at least taking sides. Stand up for your beliefs not matter what they are, be prepared to defend them though.

I'm with you Jes, I'm conservative and I think this year the vote will probably swing to the liberals, but this year I'm definitely getting more involved in politics, global issues, and the environment. Lately I feel so grown up.

12

I'd love for Dennis Kucinich to win, but sadly he won't get even close. Second choice would be Hillary.

13

I may or may not have had a weird secret crush on Mayor Rudy back in the day. Not proud.

14

Heee. He's ours. See! I told you to come here and look at houses and you know then you could see him ALL THE TIME.

First time here, I'm really enjoying this intelligent blog. Unpretentious, honest, lighthearted then serious. Really nice!
