For Whom The Belle Trolls

September 24, 2007

The fashion sense of an eighth grader.

Roger and I had a garage sale this past weekend, and while looking for things to sell I came across these troll baby earrings. I can't remember what possessed me to buy them in the first place, because they're kind of hideous, but I was young and presumably devoid of fashion sense.

So last night I tossed them in a box labeled "Goodwill" just before Roger dropped the box off at the donation center. I wondered to myself whether I should have just thrown them away instead. Who in the world would want to buy troll earrings? I can't foresee that fashion statement coming back to haunt us.

Which is why I'm confused about my feelings today. I'm not just sad, I'm depressed. I want my earrings back, and I don't know why. It's not like I'd ever wear them again. At least not in public.

I emailed Roger to warn him that I'm a little weepy, and I vowed to canvas every Goodwill store looking for them. If I ever find them, I'm going to buy them again. I guess now I know WHO in the world would buy those things. Twice.

Those would be great to wear at Halloween. I hope you find them.

2

Jessica-
I think you are suffering from separation anxiety. Conquer the fear and DO NOT get those troll earings back!!

3

whoa..MAJOR flashback upon seeing those things. i never understood just what it was about those (let's face it) ugly little creatures that fascinated everyone. i had a whole bunch of them in different outfits and everything. ah memories...

4

Get those earrings back, Jes. Maybe you have a beautiful memories with them long time ago.

5

Keep the memories, but let those earrings go!!!

7

I would totally wear those! In public, even.

Just, be bold and confident, and go forth and wear them bravely! And then, you're admired for your awesome and new fashion sense.

8

Really? You're serious?
I think i still have a pair at my mother's house that i would be glad to part with...
i really think i bought them because i was such a follower - it was 6th grade for me. i NEEDED to fit in. Ugh.

Mine (i think) were red. You know, for valentines day. Holiday Trolls. It all makes sense.

Love'em and I can't believe you could call them Hideous! They are cute! I'd have them on my desk and then when I found the right girl with the right fashion sense and quirky personality I would propose with a ring and those earrings... till death do us part baby.

Oh Jes, maybe it was good to go with a clean break from the troll babies. Now some young girl (or guy even) with a quirky sense of fasion can rejoice at the discovery of finding them and wearing them EVERYDAY. So in a way you have set the trolls free to bring joy and laughter to a whole new generation. Jes you're "paying forward", keeping the world revolving with your love . . . .

or maybe they're just really ugly and it's a good thing they are gone

Those earrings are GREAT. My sister and I used to love all things troll.

I've been having trouble getting rid of things of late - and you know what helps? Finding the right home.

The other day I had a mom and her coupla kids come by for a freecycle pickup of an old dresser. I saw the 8-year old girl in the front seat and had a brainstorm. I ran upstairs and grabbed my daughter's old watch: an opalescent indiglo Timex I had given to her for her 9th birthday. My daughter, who is now in high school, wouldn't be caught DEAD wearing this watch - and I've kept it for nostalgia - but mountains are made of nostalgia, know what I mean?

I gave my daughter's old watch to this sweet 8-year old and it was like giving her a random Christmas present in September. She went nuts for the watch!

Now I get nice glow-y feelings about somebody appreciating my daughter's first watch. And I have a little bit more room in my jewelry box. Maybe you just needed to find somebody who would appreciate those trollies as much as you did?

I feel ya. I hate it when I regret giving something away.

When I was in 6th grade, I was a big Detroit Tigers (baseball) fan. I had one of those plastic "fake" batting helmets that I wore literally everywhere. I put it in a box to go to Goodwill the day before Rob and I got married. I was trying to get married AND move out all at the same time and it was insanity.

Speaking of insanity, maybe that would be the note that I wrote and taped to the inside, written to the next owner of the hat, saying to please take care of it... because I had loved it so.

Hmm.

I have two pairs of troll earrings; one with Santa outfits on for use at the holidays, and one set that look like the one in your picture. People gave them to me because I collect the little buggers. I have about 150 of them - the collection started back in the 60's when they were first popular, and I have about 60 of them from that era, and then I have more modern ones as well. I hope you find your troll earrings again! Or you can buy some on E-bay perhaps!

14

Actually, I think they're cute. I wouldn't wear them in public, but I like them.

15

I totally bought those, in 1991. If I still knew where they were, I'd send them to you.

16

I was going to say something about Halloween also, and then I saw Lulabelle's post. You never know when earrings just like that would come in handy!

17

I totally had a pair of those, too! I'm not sure where mine are though, but if I did, I would offer to send them your way!
