Must find remedy for allergies.

November 09, 2005

A month after Roger and I were married, we visited some of my family for dinner. My brother-in-law looked at Roger's left hand, and said, "What, are you already "allergic" to your wedding ring?" - implying that he might already be "allergic" to marriage! Marriage! To me!! AS IF THAT WOULD EVER HAPPEN.

Roger looked down at his hand, laughed, and said, "Yes, actually."

He clarified that he was, in fact, allergic to his wedding band. When he wears it continuously for longer than a week, a rash encircles his ring finger, underneath the wedding band. For the last year and a half, Roger has come home and taken off his ring until the next day. He only wears it when we go out, and then, only if he remembers. Half of the time we walk out the door with the ring on my thumb, and it isn't until I prompt Roger with, "Did you forget anything?" that he remembers, and by then we're usually already in the car and ten miles down the road. Thank goodness I have a thumb.

Roger and I each have white gold bands. I'm not allergic. He is allergic to yellow gold, but didn't think he was allergic to white gold. Now we're thinking about a titanium ring. Is there ANYTHING that won't give him a rash? Should I knit one from yarn? Weave one with twine? Take him to Obscurities and have it tattooed on?

Don't think I haven't considered it.

I really like the tattoo idea. I should get my husband to do the same. His first wedding band BROKE, yes it broke, around our 1 year anniversary. The jeweler replaced it for free. He LOST the second one at a bachelor party a couple years later. No lie, a bachelor party (to his defense they were paintballing and he was afriad it would fall off, so he stuck it in his pocket). Now, he's wearing a SEVEN DOLLAR ring. It kills me. Just kills me! I think I might suggest the tattoo, and the tribal, infinity look is awesome!!

Jessica I laughed at the infinity and beyond because I thought of Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story and then I thought of Roger in a space suit pledging his love to you and then i laughed.

Ohh Jes I just came from Jo-Ann's Fabric. I got 10 yes 10 balls of yarn. Do you have a color preference? I could knit Roger a ring for you for a measly $500.00 :)

I too got the Buzz Lightyear reference, but I stopped before picturing Roger in a Buzz costume. Thanks for THAT K-T. No offense, Roger.

My finger got infected from my ring a couple of years ago. My thryoid went out of control and my ring was too tight, and then it was infected which was HORRIBLY painful. Finally they cut my rings off and my finger slowly went back down to regular size. I have a scar though from the infection. I used to never take my ring off but after not wearing it for over 6 months, I take it off everyday and forget to put it on (yesterday). TMI, sorry, I get carried away sometimes.

Jes - I have the same issue. I'm allergic to metals. It's probably not the gold he's allergic to but the metals they mix with it.

Some people can wear platinum or stainless steel when they can't wear anything else (I'm not one of them).

Have you tried to coat the inside of his ring with clear nail polish?

I like the idea of a tattoo - so much so that I would like a few of my own. For a long time I didn't want a Tattoo, lately I do.

I want something on my back, something large and wild.

I'm very, very, VERY allergic to metal. Silver is the worst. It is like acid on my skin. Gold and platinum are not much better, and (despite popular belief) stainless steel is NOT hypoallergenic. I found this out the hard way when I had to wear braces when I was little.

Generally, people who are allergic to metal are the most allergic to nickel (they actually have nickel-free jewelry). Nickel is commonly mined with gold, silver, etc. which is why one can still have a reaction to something made with silver, gold or platinum.

You are right about the titanium thing, though. Titanium, unlike stainless steel, is hypoallergenic. My glasses are made out of titanium, but they look like silver (and they don't tarnish).

And, yes, they do make rings out of titanium. My boyfriend looked into it once. I think you have to special order it, but it is possible (which is kind of nice to know, because I always assumed that I would have to wear a plastic ring if I ever got married).

Eddie wants a tattoo? This is news indeed. What would it be Eddie? A big bald eagle across your back? The dallas skyline? A hungry chicken?

What about platinum? That should be OK. Although I like the yarn too. Plus he can color coordinate it to his outfits!

I really liked Joe's titanium ring. Maybe Roger could get one like his.

A hungry chicken tattoo on Eddo's back?

HA HA HA HA!!!

Oh. My. Goodness. Gracous. Jess, you are hilarious. I like the yarn idea the best. That's too funny. But yes, I have heard (and can attest to) the fact that clear nailpolish on the inside of the ring usually keeps the metal from irritating the skin. That way he won't have to EVER take it off. :)

yes, we have been thinking about a titanium ring for a while. and when roger inspected joe's, it piqued his interest even more!

in the meantime, i'm going to steal his ring and paint the inside of it. shhh! don't tell him!

Whatever! You better not! Then I'll have a reaction to the ring AND the paint.

Besides, I've been very good about remembering to wear it. I didn't take it off last night until I went to bed!

Along with titanium, I've also suggested getting a ring made from black zirconium--it almost looks like black glass or black stone, and is very cool looking.

but would shards break off and become embedded in your skin? cause that would suck. and then maybe it would cut all the way through! and we'd have to amputate your finger! all because of a wedding band

And then his finger would look like mine! We'd have matching scars where our fingers were re-attached due to wedding ring infection, aka WRI.

Things have gone a WRI!

I love it!!! Ha Ha Ha
I will still knit you one if you want Jes!!

Roger you would not even be able to tell a difference in the ring if she put clear polish on it.

I may have the same allergy. I can't wear rings. Period. I actually think it has something to do with the fact that rings attract foul particles (bacteria, dirt, etc) and rub them into your skin all day long. I let girls know about this on our first date so they won't get bent out of shape if we end up getting married and I don't wear a ring.
